The children at Play to Learn Early Learning Centre are currently interested in
“Living world.” Every time they see a butterfly in the garden, ants that are
crawling, dead bugs on the ground they get very excited to watch closely and
observe.
It was timely that we got four tadpoles as our pet in the beginning of the
year. Everyday, they get to observe the changes in tadpoles as they turned into a
frog. “Look! It is growing its legs.” “Look! It has no more tail.” “Look! It
now turned into a frog,” some children proudly exclaimed.
Not only through daily observations the children learned about the frog. Their
learning was also extended through the use of pictures, ICT Learning like watching
the life cycle of the frog on You Tube, googled photos of the life cycle of the frog,
laminated and posted it on the frogs enclosure for children to see. Children’s
creativity was extended through ‘frog artwork’ Some children enjoyed imitating
the sound of the frog, how frogs hop and how a frog eats a fly.
This learning also helped children value Mother Earth/ Papatuanuku and
how to take care of every living things in this earth.
Our four tadpoles have now turned into frogs. Everyday children take turns in feeding
our lovely frogs. What a wonderful learning journey, tamariki!
